Traditional Holidays @ Salford

Easter is a big thing in Romania. Much bigger than chocolate eggs for kids (as most Englishmen describe the holiday ^.^) So since I didn’t go back to my country for the Christmas holiday I decided to go for the Easter one.

Here’s a preview:

But that’s pretty normal, having all the traditional stuff going on at home right ?

The purpose of this post though is to tell you that you can celebrate most of your holidays (including all the traditional stuff) right on campus if you can’t afford or don’t want to go back home!

There are 3 other Romanian people in my house and they managed to have a great Easter as well. Their parents sent them care packages with traditional food, paint (to colour the eggs). All of them went to church as well (even though they went to a church that’s different to their religion, but they chose to do that!)

I know people from all over the world that celebrated their holidays here. The best part about this is that you can celebrate with your friends from other countries that may have never had the chance to experience such things.

La ce nu m-am aşteptat...

Unul din lucrurile care îmi place foarte mult şi m-a surprins în mod plăcut, este mulţimea de activităţi cu care poţi sa-ţi ocupi timpul.

În cadrul Uniunii Studenţilor sunt organizate un fel de cercuri ale ale noastre, în engleză le zice „societies” care au scopul de a reuni persoane cu aceleaşi interese, sau de ai îi educa într-o anumită direcţie. De exemplu „Investment society” discută despre cum să investeşti banii, ce înseamnă bursa şi alte chestii în direcţia asta. Mai sunt societăţi cu teme religioase ca de exemplu cele ale hinduşilor, creştinilor, sikh.

Alt gen de grupuri sunt cluburile sportive care se concentrează pe instruirea într-un anumit sport. De exemplu poţi să înveţi Jitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do şi să fi complet începător, iar în unele cazuri primeşti şi un certificat la sfârşit.

La începutul lui octombrie, universitatea a organizat un târg la care puteai să vezi cu ce se ocupă fiecare în parte.

Ca să te înscrii nu trebuie decât să plăteşti o taxă, de cele mai multe ori în jurul a 5£ şi asta-i tot. Dacă vrei nici trebuie să o plăteşti pentru că nu te verifică nimeni şi cel puţin când te duci pentru prima dată vrei doar să vezi despre ce e vorba şi nu neapărat să devii membru.

Eu m-am înscris doar în două societăţi, prima este „Network Assurance Society” care discută mai mult despre probleme legate de securitatea calculatoarelor, însă din păcate a avut reuniunile doar în primul semestru.

Cea de-a doua este Conştiinţa Krisna (sau „Krishna Consciousness”). E foarte interesantă şi o experienţă inedită! Practic ce facem la reuniuni e să discutăm despre o anumită tematică (de exemplu managementul timpului, stabilirea obiectivelor, relaţii s.a.m.d.). Şi discutând despre lucrurile astea mai afli şi câteva chestii despre filosofia hindusă. Un lucru care face parte din obiceiurile lor este să ofere mâncare la reuniuni. Este evident vegetariană şi poate consta din orez sau un fel de mâncare de cartofi sau legume fierte, toate preparate în stil propriu, de cele mai multe ori picant.

Cam atât despre societăţi. Alte activităţi ar mai fi sala de sport care pentru cei din cămine este gratuită iar cei cu cazare privată pot să cumpere un abonament pe tot anul pentru 115£, preţ care mi se pare foarte convenabil dacă mergi la sală de 2-3 ori pe săptămână. Singura chestie e că nu au piscină dar în rest au clase de aerobic, tenis de masa, teren de fotbal, badminton, baschet, etc.

Încă un lucru în care poţi să te implici este voluntariatul. Mulţi preferă asta pentru ca „dă bine la CV”. Sunt multe activităţi de voluntariat pe care poţi să le practici cum ar fi să lucrezi ca asistent în scoli, să lucrezi cu bătrâni, să ajuţi la ecologizarea unei zone şi tot aşa. Oportunităţi tot apar de-a lungul anului şi mi se pare un mod bun de a socializa alături de comunitatea locală.

De fapt, motivul excursiei noastre in Olanda este pentru ca Saxion ne-a invitat la un Simpozion despre Educatie si Internationalizare la care au participat agenti de-al lor din toata lumea (China, Indonezia, Europa, Malaezia) si universitati din Olanda (si cateva partenere noua - Tilburg University, Zeeland University of Applied Sciences, University of Groningen, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences). Saxion are 2 campusuri, unul in Deventer (unde am fost cazati) si unul in Enschede. De dimineata am fost sa vizitam campusul din Enschede (la 5 km de Germania) care este la o distanta de o ora de Deventer.

Am discutat cu cativa dintre reprezentantii fiecarei scoli de acolo si chiar si cu un student roman care isi representa facultatea (BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering). Dupa ce am discutat cu fiecare si am adunat cateva pliante pe care sa le aducem acasa, am inceput turul campusului :).

Pe la pranz, ne-am intors in Deventer unde la fel, am stat de vorba cu reprezentanti ai facultatilor si am facut turul campusului. 🙂

Mai jos puteți vedea un reportaj filmat în Coventry despre românii care studiază în străinătate.

Pare cam pesimist după părerea mea dar e totuși real. Sunt mulți studenți străini care vin aici. Mulți români vin ca să scape de România.

Într-adevăr, nu e foarte greu să ajungi aici poate chiar mai ușor decât să intri la unele universități din țară, împrumutul pentru taxa de studii e destul de convenabil. Studiul se axează foarte mult pe partea practică, dotările sunt ok, s. a. m. d.

Ziua 2 este ziua dedicata Universitatii Radboud Nijmegen - am ajuns in Nijmegen, un orasel foarte placut aflat aproape de granita cu Germania. In Nijmegen traiesc aproximativ 160.000 de locuitori si printre acestia aproape 40.000 de studenti. Universitatea domina toata partea sudica a orasului intr-unul dintre cele mai verzi campusuri pe care le-am vazut vreodata. Toate cladirile au parcuri imprejur si chiar printre diferitele departamente. Veti vedea mai multe din fotografii mai jos.

Radboud University (RU) este o universitate de cercetare foarte apreciata la nivel national in Olanda cat si pe plan international. RU ocupa locul 149 mondial in www.topuniversities.com Top Universities 2010, o crestere foarte mare din 2009 cand ocupa locul 220. Facilitatile oferite de Radboud sunt absolut impresionante. Cel putin in ceea ce priveste caminele studentesti noi am crezut initial ca sunt complexe super noi de apartamente (gen Baneasa...you'll see); cladirea facultatii de Stiinte am crezut ca e sediul unei multinationale cu multe multe milioane de euro buget. Cam asa iti dai seama cat investeste o tara cu o populatie cat jumatate din cea a Romaniei in educatie.

Partea de lauda personala: cu mandrie va anuntam pe toti ca Radboud University Nijmegen a fost de acord sa colaboreze cu EDMUNDO pentru a recruta studenti cat mai buni pentru programele sale de master! Asa ca, cei interesati sau cei care sunt convinsi de cuvintele si fotografiile noastre, scrieti repede la edmundo@educativa.ro. Un consilier va va ajuta, ba mai mult, chiar un consilier care a absolvit aceasta universitate! (Buna, Judit!! 🙂 )

Daca nu v-ati prins deja din primele randuri ce s-a intamplat intre 12-17 aprilie, va putem spune si povestea. Vom lasa insa pozele facute sa vorbeasca mai mult decat noi. Suntem amutiti de frumusetea unei tari atat de mici si atat de plate si incremeniti de gradul de dezvoltare al facilitatilor pe care universitatile din Olanda le ofera studentilor. Cu ocazia acestei vizite ne-am convis ca TOATE universitatile olandeze (fie ele de cercetare, cu traditie sau de stiinte aplicate, mai noi) ofera un mediu de dezvoltare academic si profesional neintalnit in Romania (din pacate).

Olanda este o tara minunata (poate una din favoritele mele personale):

Verde...foarte verde, peste tot
Cultura foarte interesanta si liberala (nu va ganditi numai la prostii 🙂 ) - sunt oameni primitori si sinceri
Dulciuri excelente - Stroopwaffel - caramel in cea mai buna forma a sa
Orase de poveste, cu istorie insa foarte dinamice
Limba poate fi o bariera insa TOATA lumea vorbeste engleza foarte bine (controlor de tren, vanzator de bilete autobuz si sofer autobuz, gardieni publici etc.)

Prima zi: Utrecht University of Applied Sciences si Hanze University of Applied Sciences

Am ajuns in Amsterdam, la Schipol (aeroport), la ora 7:00 am, 12 aprilie. Am luat primul tren spre Utrecht si ne-am grabit sa ne intalnim cu contactul nostru de la biroul de Marketing and Communication, Nadja. Mai jos gasiti dovada celor spuse mai sus, pentru cazul de fata: Hogeschool Utrecht sau Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.

Foarte frumos in Utrecht! Prea scurt totusi...a trebuit sa ne urcam repede in tren pentru o calatorie de aproape 2 ore catre Groningen - orasul cu varsta medie a populatiei de in jur de 30 de ani. 190.000 de locuitori si 60.000 de studenti = loads of affordable fun. Groningen este un oras vechi care a stiut sa isi pastreze sarmul chiar daca strazile sale sunt impanzite de puburi studentesti. Revin cu un alt aranjament de materiale video si foto adunate de-a lungul plimbarilor mele prin oras.

Ceea ce se vede la minutul 1:50 e Belmont Street, o oaza a iesirilor tarzii in oras, unde aproape fiecare usa duce intr-un pub sau intr-un club, perfect integrate in arhitectura orasului de granit (prima data ma opresc la Slain's Castle, unde la intrare pe dreapta se gaseste o statuie uriasa cu Vlad Tepes si un tablou al castelului Bran si urmeaza discoteca Priory, ce seamana cu o mica bisericuta gotica).

From 0% to hero (on the essay)

Remember that essay I was writing a while ago ? The results finally came last night (a week later than I expected) and I was shocked to find out that I got a massive 0% on it

Electronic submission was one of the major things that were implemented at the beginning of this academic year, and it was only used for the first year undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses (more or less guinea pigs, but then again I like keeping up with the technology ).

Blackboard is an e-learning platform that most universities in England (and all over the world) use. To dumb it down, it’s the place where lecturers/tutors post all the module materials (PowerPoint slides, podcasts, videos, documents etc.), where you can communicate with fellow colleagues (via a forum and access to emailing all the people on a certain course) and where, since the beginning of this year, you submit your assignments (at least at some courses).

So the TurnItIn system was kind of fitted in the whole Blackboard platform. TurnItIn is this cool system which mainly does 3 things: help determine if the paper submitted was plagiarized or not, provide a framework for grading the paper, and let the tutor give rich feedback on the paper. It determines the plagiarism level by checking your paper against millions of other resources (statistics on their website say they check your paper against 150+ million student papers, 90.000+ journals, 1+ million instructors, 14+ billion webpages etc.) and shows where a specific bit of information came from. After it does all it’s magic, it spits out a percentage that indicates how much of your paper is other people’s work. Tutors don’t take TurnItIn’s numbers as a definitive sign of plagiarism, but they do tend to go the extra mile and find the truth if the system shows a big number.

Now comes the fun part: I went to Blackboard last night, went to the TurnItIn section and there it was, my mark: 0%. Clicked on it and went to the tutor’s comment which went like this “TurnItIn showed a 100% plagiarized score so this is to be treated with suspicion of plagiarism”. I panicked for a second but then I chilled really fast when I realized that TurnItIn said I even stole my own name, tutor and group That was impossible ! I e-mailed the module leader and the next day I got this e-mail from him: “Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have personally marked your essay and awarded you a mark of 88 per cent. Apologies for the mishap, which was not of my making.” followed by a revised comment on TurnItIn: “Extremely good essay indeed which shows you have researched widely, described the key features of learning and made some thoughtful evaluation of the process, and integrated evidence from some contemporary organizations. Well done!”.

That goes to show that no system is perfect, and that most of the times you can rely on nice people over machines

Time Flies @ Salford University

Here we are, 2 weeks away from the Easter Holiday which more or less means 2 weeks away from the end of the first year I say that because there are 3 weeks of Holiday, then there are the exam weeks after that, then the semester officially ends.

It’s as if yesterday I was greeted at the airport by one of the Student Life people, crammed into a bus with so many different, fascinating people. It’s as if yesterday I got lost for 3 hours on the road from the Maxwell Building to Castle Irwell (a road I need to walk daily now).

I know I may come across as overly nostalgic, but the student lifestyle seems to fit me the best, and I am enjoying every bit of it.

Looking back at the first third of my Undergraduate life it seems that I’ve missed out on so much, even if I achieved so many things: a job, good grades, various projects with the International Office here at Salford Uni, Student Representative (applying for the Student Liaison position), Salford Student Life Award (a thing I’d like to go into more detail in another post), beginner in Japanese, Mountaineering Club, new and amazing friends and last but not least: amazing and unforgettable moments with the said friends

I did not join the SIFE society though. I only went to the gym in the first semester. I didn’t learn how to swim yet (shame, I know ^^). Didn’t go out as much as I wanted (be it cause I hate indie music or I didn’t have enough cash). I missed an Epica concert e.t.c.

The point I am trying to get across is that the student life can be so much more different than what you might be used to and, unfortunately for most, it’s also unbelievably short. You basically have only 3 years (4 if you do a postgrad course after) of this extremely dynamic and fun-filled lifestyle and it is up to you to make the most out of them.

What is important to keep in mind though is that you go to University to kick-start your career. It’s very easy to get tangled in this pleasure that is University Life, forget about the main reason you are here, then regret seeing so much money going down the drain.

As sad as I feel about finishing my first year, I know that there’s another 2 in front of me and I get the rare chance to do stuff that I regret not doing in the first year

The single-most important piece of advice I always give to prospective students is this: “Get involved!”. You have the opportunity to do so much, in so little time.
